Champions League Group Stage – Predictions
In this article we will give two predictions for two of the teams in the groups in this year’s Champions League race. Since it is more logical to play high odds in long term predictions, we will combine these two bets into a slip. We are betting on two of the teams that are in very interesting and unpredictable groups at first glance, but we choose Ajax and Leipzig to reach the semifinals exactly and you will find out why below.
Analysis and predictions for some of the groups in the UCL
3. Olympique Lyon
4. RB Leipzig
Prediction : Leipzig to qualify
Leipzig have already participated in Champions League groups once. It happened 2 years ago, but then their performance was not so good and their group was similar to this – even. Now, however, this is a completely different team, which is even stronger than it was then. They have a new coach, who quickly started to put ideas into action, and it was not difficult for him, because he had a serious experience from his stay in Hoffenheim. Nagelsmann has a very young team here, with only few “older players” between the ages of 28-29. Leipzig started with 3 wins in the Bundesliga and their game is great. We think that Zenit, Benfica and Lyon are no better than the Germans.
We can only say that the Leipzig team is currently valued at around 470 million pounds. Benfica and Zenit players generally can’t even reach that amount in market value, just for comparison. Lyon have a lot of experience in the tournament, but did sell key players this summer and it is not clear how they will perform in the Champions League. We are betting that there will be at least 2 weaker teams than Leipzig and the Germans will be able to reach the round of 16 for the first time in their short history.
Prediction : Ajax to qualify
Ajax’s performance in the Champions League last season will be remembered for a long time. They were seconds away from reaching the final in the tournament. Their main rivals in the groups are now expected to be Valencia and Chelsea as the British are coming out of the 1st round because they won the Europa League last season. Ajax have sold their 2 stars, but we have seen them in previous seasons also sell important players and then find new talent and rely mainly on team spirit to do well. Ajax, like Leipzig, is a team made up mainly of young players.
Our forecast for Ajax to qualify is not only because of the Dutch class, but also because of the competition. Valencia are strengthened but lack Ajax’s experience. Lilles did sell their two major players in attack last season, and although they bought a lot of stars, we don’t think they have the class to reach the semifinals. Chelsea may be the favorites, but the Blues are not currently the team from years ago, and are definitely weaker than last season without Hazard and Sarri. Among other things, in the Champions League, one team must have that European DNA that Ajax has.
