Champions League Predictions – Round of 16
Here we have made our long-term predictions for two of the Champions League round of 16 games. Liverpool will accept at Anfield the big Bavarian machine, Bayern Munich. Another english side in face of Spurs will meet Borussia Dortmund.
TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR - BORUSSIA DORTMUND
Prediction : Dortmund to qualify at 1.84
Apparently the big goal for Schwarzgelben this season will be winning the Bundesliga. However, they will not give up and will chase a good performance in the Champions League, too. Favre’s squad is big enough and has enough potential to handle these tasks. The team is progressing sharply and the young talents are shining. All players move very fast on the pitch, have very good dynamics and seem to be working well together. Most importantly, the team is motivated and the defensive game has improved.
The problem with Spurs is that they do not have a big enough squad. It is more important for them to get back into the top 4 this season, because they need incomes for the huge cost for the new stadium. In this club there is a long-term development and it goes through the achievement of certain goals. Moreover, it is now unclear how rumors will affect to Pochettino, because, obviously, Man Utd. consider him as an option for United coach. It was a huge problem for Watford, for example, when Everton wanted Silva last season. An important factor is that Spurs play at home against the big rival, Arsenal, 3 days before the rematch in Dortmund, so this complicates their task quite a lot.
We look forward to a very good match in which to see quality, world-class football, goals, tactics, shining performance and so on. Most likely, the team that will go ahead will achieve this with enormous difficulties and the battle won’t be over till the end. Due to the more sophisticated schedule, shorter squad, Tottenham goals for the season overall and even the fact that they are going to play in the second match as a guest, we think Dortmund will go through.
LIVERPOOL - BAYERN MUNICH
Prediction : Liverpool to qualify at 1.84
The Bavarians are experiencing serious difficulties at the moment, most notably they are playing bad in defense. There were rumours about Kovac’s sacking, but he got some good results and was ranked 1st in the Champions League groups lately. Bayern, however, will find it very difficult, given the fact they concede easy goals and make mistakes, to deal with Liverpool’s big strikers. Robben and Ribery, if they play, will have to try to outplay Alexander-Arnold and Robertson, who are extremely intense players.
Liverpool do not have very complicated matches around the Bayern games in the league, apart from visiting Old Trafford after the rematch in Munich. The only problem for the Reds is van Dijk’s absence in the first match, but the Germans will not have Müller. Liverpool is a world grand and it has not come as a surprise they made it to the Champions League final in their second season in the last eight years. This is Liverpool’s strongest team at least since the Premier League era and we think they deserve to be slight favorite over Bayern. Let’s not forget that Klopp knows perfectly the Bavarians and is used to playing against them.
If these two teams had stood up years ago, Bayern would undoubtedly be the most likely winner. After Guardiola, however, the Bavarians are not at this level either with Ancelotti or Kovac. Liverpool is with the third youngest team in the Premier League. Besides, Klopp’s bench is long enough. He can choose the right players for these matches. Anfield longs for games like these with Bayern. Liverpool’s team is accustomed to eliminating similar rivals and the examples have been thousands over the years. There is no other moment, in which anyone can believe more in Liverpool, than the current one. The reds are ready for something big this time, which has always slipped on Klopp in recent years.
