Football Movies
We have chosen few films, which stand out with something more than other football films, and there are many of them. This is a subjective ranking, but if you ask a friend about which are the best football movies he has watched, he will surely think of one of those. Here are the films and what is the main concept behind them. ⬇️
The Damned United (2009)
Undoubtedly one of the top, top football movies of all time. If you still don’t know who Brian Clough is and what he accomplished, you can learn a lot about him in this spectacle, but the events are before his grandiose period at Nottingham Forest, which made him so famous.
The legendary English manager Brian Clough is remembered almost as much for his volatile, eccentric temperament as for his brilliance on the bench. Damned Leeds United is trying to capture both sides of the late former Nottingham Forest coach and Derby County by focusing on one of the darkest eras in Clough’s career.
It tells the story of the 44 days Clough spent as manager of Leeds in 1974. An era that is remembered as one of the most outrageous and controversial spells in English football history.
Already an unpopular figure for Elland Road’s players and fans, the new manager’s methods and quirky personality lead to an almost open war in the locker room before he is fired just over a month after his appointment.
Michael Sheen is great in the main role, presenting Clough’s insecurity and hot temper as he battles discontent at his new club, but keeps his human side intact. However, some are not in awe of the production. Dave Mackay is suing the producers for what he sees as a misrepresentation of events.
Green Street Hooligans (2005)
Football in England was conquered by hooligans several decades before that tragedy in Heysel. This movie represents the true side of the English game at the time.
This is about football from the point of view of the ultras. He tells of an American student, Matt Bakker, who was unjustly expelled from Harvard and flees to his sister’s home in England. At one point there, he becomes a friend with her relative from the family of her husband and becomes acquainted with the Underground of English football hooliganism.
This is a powerful story about the Green Street Elite company operating in West Ham. The main character learns to fight for and stand on the side of those who call themselves his “friends”. This is a relatively accurate depiction of the hooligan culture that downplayed and defiled the English game at the time.
The Football Factory (2004)
Another great movie about hooligans, which reflects not just the football on the field, but outside it.
While Green Street, involving “Frodo Begins”, is the most famous movie worldwide, its Hollywood interpretation of football violence does not really portray reality as well as it does here. Enter the football factory based on John King’s novel, a dystopian interpretation of a Chelsea firm full of petty theft, cocaine abuse and willful racism.
The film depicts Danny Dyer’s troubles in a state of extreme paranoia after an unfortunate encounter with the family of Tamer Hassan, the head of the big rival, Millwall. The climax is a brutal battle arranged before the Chelsea and Millwall Cup match, and James’ broadcast, “Underground,” is the perfect way to end any such movie.
Mean Machine (2001)
In this remake of the American football movie “The Long Yard,” Jones plays a former England captain who is being prosecuted for match-fixing when his career goes awry. The assassination of a police officer results in the use of defamation against him by people who don’t like his lifestyle. He finds redemption after making the most of his friends in prison and, in practice, managing them for his purely human capacity.
From that point on, everything becomes quite predictable. Outsiders make money, as we have seen in millions of sports directors, but in this adventure, the characters of the prison and the game itself keep the action interesting and energetic enough. Watch out for Jason Statham, who speaks with an almost incomprehensible Scottish accent, to play the outspoken, martial arts obsessed goalkeeper of a prison team in a sort of prison football match.
Okolofutbola (2013)
The scariest side of football are the football hooligans. This time, however, it’s about the Russians. They are the most ferocious and dangerous representatives of football fans. They call themselves ultras and command the parade in the football world of fans.
No matter what their job is in real life and what they do socially, football unites them. There they represent a “Firm”. It is difficult to get into such a Firm, but if someone manages to do it, it will totally change his life, because there’s no going back!
In this movie you will also make a serious distinction between Western and Russian cinema. There are many well-filmed scenes of battles between factions of rival teams. The ultras of Spartak Moscow is one of them. In the sector with the most extreme supporters, there is room for everyone – all kinds of people of different ages and different lifestyles outside the stadium, but in the stands they are equal and will give everything for their favorite team, even their life!
Goal! The Dream Begins (2005)
The story here tells of Santiago Muñez, a Mexican immigrant living in Los Angeles who works as a gardener, but wants to make the most of his incredible talent.
His dreams come true when he wins the opportunity to play for Newcastle United and, while battling the rain and cold of the British Northeast, Muñez is slowly building his name in Britain. There are many moments of dramatic tension and many last-minute agonizing goals. Santi even secures Newcastle a place in the Champions League, proving his value to the club.
World stars, real matches, huge stadiums – Goal! is the most realistic football movie ever made!
Victory (1981)
What can you imagine in a movie about a Nazi military camp starring Sylvester Stallone, Pele and Michael Caine? It may not be the most beautiful, but Escape to Victory provides a great deal of pleasure to those who wish to discontinue their worldview.
The plot shows that Caine plays the role of a British prisoner of war and a former professional footballer involved in organizing a highly controversial friendly match that is quickly becoming the focus of attention for the German authorities.
Practically without any chances, Caine’s “ragged team”, backed by the inclusion of Pele and much of the Ipswich Town first team since the early ’80s, made a 1-4 comeback to reach a draw. Stallone shocks everyone with a frankly incredible save that maintains the balance of the match.
Not only that, but the heroes take advantage of the invasion of the field at the last whistle to escape from the clutches of their abductors, but who are the abductors and why is this match so intense? You will see it in the movie. Don’t miss it!
Bend It Like Beckham (2002)
Comedy for girls who do not follow the rules to achieve their goals. Keira Knightley co-stars. The film explores the ever-expanding world of women’s soccer and follows two 18-year-old children who are ready for anything to become professionals. For one of the girls, apparently the talent she possesses is not enough for her parents, who have a very conservative understanding.
You don’t have to understand football to enjoy this movie. It is fully guaranteed to set a good example and may even tempt some girls to play in the local park.
Top 5 Documentary Football Films
We deliberately divide documentaries from those in the chart above because they are different in content and presentation. It tells the true legendary football stories of great personalities and teams that you are “obliged” to know as fans of the sport. Most, of course, are related to English football. The British just know how to present themselves to the world one way or another. ⬇️
Bobby Robson: More Than a Manager (2018)
Meet the documentary for the phenomenal Sir Bobby Robson, who remains in history as one of the greatest, and why not the greatest, legends in English sport overall. Not only an incredible manager, but also a unique person, Sir Bobby Robson is revered by every football personality in England, Europe and the world.
In the summer of 1995, Bobby Robson was diagnosed with cancer and was given only months to live. Miraculously, less than a year later, Robson becomes a manager of the legendary Spanish team, Barcelona. Bobby Robson, however, is more than a manager.
As a son of a Newcastle miner, he gets to play there for his country. However, when Ipswich becomes a European power, it becomes clear that his true talent is in coaching. Fearless until the end, his skill was to be the best possible, when the situation was worst.
The Two Escobars (2010)
Andres Escobar is one of the best and most respected athletes in Colombia. A gifted football player whose strong character set him a role model and he himself brought his team to the World Cup in 1994.
Pablo Escobar is not related to Andres in any way, but they know each other well. Pablo owns the club that Andres plays for and completely manages the transfers and the sporting technical part of the club. This helps the team to become one of the best in the world. While Andres is perceived as a hero, Pablo makes his money as a monstrous drug trafficker and gets involved in professional football as he loves the game, but also has to launder his money in some legal way.
Pablo creates an image for himself as Colombian Robin Hood. He opens clinics, creates affordable housing, and builds football fields for the poor, but he and his supporters are willing to use violence to achieve their goals. When Andres crashes in an important game during the 1994 World Cup, he learns a painful lesson about loyalty among Escobar’s people.
The film’s directors, Jeff Zimbalist and Michael Zimbalist, share the remarkable true story of two very different men whose love of the game led them to good and bad relationships in the documentary. The world premiere of “Two Escobar” takes place at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2010.
One Night in Turin (2010)
Before the Premier League and the multimillion-dollar payday, in England football was a dirty word. The game was out of favor, and the fans, the hooligans, the nation, and in general, were all down to their feet.
However, we all know how fans in England accept football and how specific their passion is, especially to the national team.
1990 the 14th World Cup is being held. The British have a great team and reach the semifinals, where they face one of their big rivals, West Germany. The fatal loss of the three lions has a terrible impact on the entire nation, and this remains one of the most painful and emblematic memories of eliminations of the world for the English.
The Class of ’92 (2013)
The Class of 92 describes the rise in the football hierarchy of six exceptionally talented young Manchester United players – David Beckham, Nicky Butt, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and the Neville brothers, Phil and Gary. The film covers the period 1992-1999, ending with the triumph of the great treble for the Red Devils and specifically raising the 2nd European Cup at that time.
At the heart of the film is the story of how six 14-year-old working-class boys of different backgrounds came together to play for the same club. They have become the backbone of one of the most successful teams in world football and have remained best friends throughout their incomparable success.
Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait (2006)
The film is a flashback to the match Real Madrid vs Villarreal in La Liga, played on April 23, 2005 at “Santiago Bernabeu. Then for 92 minutes 17 television cameras monitor genius Zidane and his fantastic tricks with the ball. Those executives, however, directors Douglas Gordon and Philippe Parreno inserted snippets and insert another character – the Cuban boy Elian Gonzalez and his destiny associated with the fight of the United States and Cuba.
The film is a magnificent parable about the modern world, how Zidane and football are united and happy people, but far away in other countries, death, war and revenge divided them forever. Zinedine Zidane was and remains not only a symbol of beautiful football, but the policy because it is the son of Algerian-Berber immigrants in France – a country with a tradition of democracy that gave a chance to refugees from Africa.
For some critics of the film, however, the notorious incident in the final of the World Cup, when Zizzu header to Materazzi casts a shadow on the reputation of the Frenchman as someone whose performances on the pitch have been able to unite the people. They ask why it is used for emphasis in the documentary, after giving such a bad example to all children worldwide. Another theme is that the film was conceived and shot before the accident happened.

Silver Linings Playbook (2012)
David Russell is one of the iconic directors, and if you’ve watched some of his work, you know what it’s all about.
In the Silver Linings Playbook the main character is Pat. He has bipolar disorder and is from Philadelphia. He spent the last eight months in a psychiatric hospital, where he was admitted after a brutal incident before catching his wife with another man. Pat and his father are fans of the Eagles, a local American football team.

He soon befriends Tiffany, who is a young woman but has been in mourning since her husband’s death and has been depressed. She tends to have sex with just about anyone she meets because she is kind of a nymphomaniac. She also knows Pat’s wife and offers him a letter from him if he agrees to partner with her in a local dance competition.
Pat and his father play Bradley Cooper and Robert de Niro, and Jennifer Lawrence is Tiffany. The film has many Academy Award nominations for all kinds of awards and its rating in IMDB is 7.8.
Casino (1995)
Martin Scorsese cannot betray his style. His view of money, sex and brutality is a story of what happens to the “good guys” of the “poor streets” when they surpass their wildest dreams and reach the climax of their wealth and power.
The movie “Casino” is about the internal struggles of a corrupt casino in Las Vegas. The film follows the lives of three characters: ‘Ace’ Rothstein, a bookmaker adviser, Nicky Santoro, a mafia deputy boss and Ace’s longtime best friend, as well as Ginger McKenna, a long-legged former prostitute with a fondness for jewelry and risks.
Ace plays by the rules while Nicky and Ginger use cheating. The first hour of the movie shows them climbing to the top, while the second half follows their fall as corrupt FBI officers and an angry mob of bosses capture their Camelot every minute.
Eight Men Out (1988)
This movie is old, but it’s an absolute classic. The film, made on a real occasion, takes us back to 1919 and recreates the most massive corruption scandal in the field of sports to date. The all-time favorite for the Chicago White Sox title, losing the final after a surprisingly weak performance.
A federal investigation is underway to find that eight players on the team have taken colossal amounts of money at that time and played simulative. They are all suspended for lifetime of playing professional baseball. A shocking story about the price of loyalty, betrayal of friendship and nostalgia for the baseball field.
The Color of Money (1986)
Paul Newman and Tom Cruise. These two are the most sought Hollywood stars at the time, and are igniting the screen in this exciting drama. New classics and absolute style entirely in Scorsese style. Newman recreates one of his most memorable roles after Robert Rosson’s “The Hustler” (1961). Eddie Felson still thinks that “gambling earned money is twice as sweet as this earned by honest work.”
He makes a lucrative but very risky partnership with Vincent, a young player with a sharp-tongued girlfriend named Carmen. The color of money will electrify you with its intense storyline, stunning camerawork and dynamic acting.
Two for the Money (2005)
Caruso’s gambling stars include Matthew McConaughey as Brandon Wang, a former college quarterback whose life plans change when he is injured at the end of his career. Brandon appears to have remarkable skills in picking winning football bets. Walter takes Brandon with him to New York and introduces him to the brilliant, fast-paced, cash-strapped lifestyle that Brandon eagerly and successfully assimilates. As Brandon’s “magical” actions cool down and he grows older, Walter begins to take his place a little by little, but this carries its enormous risks, and throughout history there is a woman involved, as always.
