The most successful teams in the big European leagues
Here we will show you in tabels which are the most successful teams in the top leagues in Europe, how many cups they got in their history and in which tournaments have performed most successfully.
NOTE : There are teams that have won domestic cups, but do not have titles or European cups and do not participate in the tables. The only included stats are for the major trophies without supercups or any international tournaments like Club World Cup
No doubt the greatest sensation in the history of English football was Leicester’s title in the 2015/2016 season, when foxes made it in a battle with Tottenham. It was a shaky season. Surely there were other huge surprises in the last century, including English ones, but then the competition, the money, the commercialization, the football in general and everything that around it were different and definitely there was a much bigger chance everyone to become a champion than now, but foxes have shown that miracles are possible sometimes. Manchester United replaced Liverpool and now they got most premier league titles, because of the golden era with Ferguson, but the reds are over the rest of the English teams in Europe, while City and Chelsea have just started to write their history this century
In Spain, Real Madrid and Barcelona have always been at the top of most charts. However, Atletico and Sevilla have also gained European successes and glory over the years, but Real Madrid is outstanding with all of their 33 titles and 13 European Cups and Champions Leagues. Athletic Bilbao is the club, however, which deserves the most respect for their century-old tradition of using only local players in their teams. With this practice Bilbao is the 4th best team in Spain in history with 8 titles and 23 Copa Del Rey cups.
Milan is not the same team that has been over the years, but Rossoneri dominate the European scene over the rest Italian clubs. Juventus are unbreakable in Italy with 34 titles and 13 cups and Inter have 3 UEFA Cups. Roma has been successful in Copa Italy, but has only three titles, while Napoli and Parma have also got some European trophies.
Bayern München without a doubt is the top team in Germany with much more success than the rest. Borussia Dortmund, however, has the chance to equalize Nurnberg on titles and to become second with them with 9. They and Hamburger are the only remaining teams in Germany who have ever won European Cup and Borussia Mönchengladbach has the most trophies in Europa League – 2, when the title of the tournament was still UEFA Cup. A curious fact is that Rapid Wien has more titles than, for example, Bayer Leverkusen. The only title in the history of the Austrian team was in 1942, when the Austrian teams took part in the German Bundesliga, around World War II.
Surprisingly or not, PSG is not even in the top 4 of the teams that have won the most titles in France. However, they have the chance to become the first in a few years time since they are only 3 titles from St. Etienne and it is clea that no one can stop Parisians in the coming years in Ligue 1. Still, Marseille is undoubtedly the greatest French team, not only because they have 9 titles, but they are the only French team ever to win a European trophy – the European Cup. Interestingly, Olympique Lyon did not have a single title before 2002, when they won their first one and then another 6 consecutive, leaving this period until 2008 as the greatest in the history of the club.
Ajax is the big grand here with the most trophies and success in Dutch history. Overall, the national team and all clubs have always been known for their great football, many talents and, in general, a model for the game. PSV and Feyenoord also have 1 European Cup and UEFA Cup.
In Portugal, there have always been and probably will always have three teams – Benfica, Porto and Sporting Lisbon. Benfica dominates with the titles and domestic cups and together with Porto they have 2 European cups, but Porto remains the only Portuguese team with Europa League/ UEFA Cup trophies. However, Benfica has no European success for more than 55 years after having played many finals, as it is interesting here that after beating Real Madrid under Guttman in 1962, he wants a salary increase from management afterwards, but he does not receive it. Later he left the club and cursed Benfica not to take an European trophy for another 100 years, which eventually is still happening.
